=Chapter 1=

The only thing sadder than a battle won was the paperwork afterward. Or in this case, since there was no actual paper and instead a bunch of glowing lines across his map, it was mostly Matt Fang seated with his legs up on a chair and waving his hands around like a mad conductor.
Every once in a while, he’d grimace and stop, the pain from the beating just a day ago coursing through his body. He hadn’t realised until later, when the adrenaline had faded sufficiently, that he’d bruised his ribs. Then, of course, there were the torn skin and cuts across his face and arms that he hadn’t even realised had happened during the scuffle, along with numerous other bruises.
And he didn’t even want to discuss the hanging piece of skin on the side of his face or the giant cut across his body that he’d had to have stitched up.
Who’d have thought that a minute or two of fighting could end with so many bruises, even when you were the winner?
Probably quite a few people, really, if Matt was being truthful. Bouncers, bodyguards, policemen, some army personnel. The ones who actually did physical things rather than paperwork or logistics or, you know, the vast majority of other jobs. Martial artists too, he guessed.
None of them described the ex-accountant of course. The most strenuous thing he’d done physically was a game of ultimate frisbee about six months ago. Or, well, six months before his transfer, he guessed. He was kind of losing his sense of time, his mind split between the day he’d died and, well, everything that had happened after.
Still, he at least knew how to check how long it had been since he’d arrived here. A flicker of his hands was enough to pull up the status report.

Global Status Report
Day 53
Pooled Gold: 236 (+32.25 Gold per day)
Total Units: 4 Woodlings, 3 Firecracker Flowers
Cooldown: 9 Days to Burst Production, 4 Days to Spell Casting

Fifty-three days. Nearly two months since he had arrived, give or take a few days depending on how you counted what a month was. More importantly, the Global Status Report was the biggest change in his reports since he’d managed to take over the second town. Now, if he wanted to – had to – he’d be able to dig down into each town for individual management.
On the other hand, the fact that he actually had a global pooled treasury and gold increase meant that he could build out towns differently. Specialise them if you would. Make one just a gold producer, make the other place where he got units.
At least in theory, but naturally, when theory met reality, things went to hell. Part of that was, of course, the devil in the details when one went into individual town reports.

Town 1 Status Report
In Production: None
Structures Completed: Grove, Road, Stall (II), Ranged Copse, Harbour, Village #2 – Watch Tower, Blacksmith
Structures Available: Grove (II), Basic Greenhouse, Watch Tower, Tavern, Marketplace, Ranged Copse (II), Stone Harbour, Fishing Dock, Shipyard, Trading Post, Temple, Blacksmith (Upgrade)

Town 2 Status Report
In Production: None
Structures Completed: Den (II), Tavern, Wall, Temple, Stall
Structures Available: Den (III), Javelin Range, Training House, Watch Tower, Blacksmith, Stall (II), Temple (II)

Both towns were quite different, at least in what they had concentrated upon. Some, like the Den and Javelin Range or Grove and Ranged Copse, were just different names for the same thing. And the addition of the new town added more gold to his coffers, even though it also meant he had more places to spend all that new money on.
Mostly, Matt had spent this morning on verifying the basics of his original and new settlements, making sure his guesses, like what the Training House was, were correct. There were enough differences that he had wanted to deal with them with a clear head, even if he did lose a day or two of production, rather than engaging in it immediately following the battle the day before.
He had to admit, after getting beaten up and maybe even mildly concussed, he had not been in any mental state to make big decisions. Nevermind the fact that a part of him had still wondered if he would wake up in a new location after going to bed.
Stranger things had happened.
Now that he had done that, he needed to verify the unknown. In this case, the two buildings he hadn’t himself purchased before but were available to him now – the Tavern and the Temple.
Matt had to admit, he was most excited to see what the Tavern was.

Name: Tavern
Building Type: Hero Management
Tier: Lesser Tier I
Heroes Available to Recruit: Bard, Warlord
Number of Available Hero Slots: 1

Matt blinked, staring at the building information. As usual, there was less to go on than he’d like. What other options were there in Hero Management? Could he train Heroes if he upgraded the Tavern further? A quick perusal of his available buildings list showed there was nothing like that right now. So was that a no or just a possibility he had yet to find?
He – obviously – poked at the Hero types, but, unfortunately, there was no information available on them either. Now, he sort of knew what Bards did, in theory. Except, of course, they might not be the same here. If they were though, he could not see himself recruiting a singer.

Would you like to recruit a Bard?
Cost: 200 Gold

Declining that option, Matt leaned back. He only had one available slot and the previous opponent had commanded a Healer of some form. And that came from the Temple. He should look at that rather than pick up a weird singer and lousy mage combination.
On that note, time to look at the Temple.

Name: Temple
Building Type: Hero Management
Tier: Lesser Tier I
Heroes Available to Recruit: Priest
Number of Available Hero Slots: 1

Matt pulled up the upgrades too, just to get an eye on them. Not that he was planning on upgrading it right now, but getting a healer was never a bad idea. And he’d only seen a small amount of what the other Hero was able to do after all.

Upgrade Available: Temple (II)
Building Type: Religious
Tier: Lesser Tier II
Cost: 350 Gold
Production Time: 12 days

Expensive and no indication of what he’d get. If he had to assume, some bonus to morale perhaps and more Priest options. The only question was how expensive it would be to pick up the Priest.

Would you like to recruit a Priest?
Cost: 200 Gold

Wincing, Matt shook his head. As good as it sounded, he had a lot more to consider before he went spending his limited funds.
After all, he once again had to balance his immediate needs with long-term growth. He no longer had an enemy directly in front of him, but they were out there. Somewhere.
All of which meant reviewing his units in play.

About Magic Kingdom at War Volume 4

The only thing sadder than a battle won was the paperwork afterward

Matt Fang has won the battle. He's got a new town, a whole new race of units to control and a lot of catching up to do. He's still stuck in this strange realm, one of the last defenders of humanity against an enemy he doesn't understand. Only contest.

Still, he's got a job to do, even if it's not one he trained for.

At least ruling a magical kingdom is better than punching in at the office.
